Geographic information system (GIS) and its application in petroleum exploration

    • Geographic information system (GIS) is a computer application system which combines geography information with engineering information. The information used to describe objects in petroleum exploration is closely related to geographical ones. Among it there is a large of data and graphical information that cannot be tackled with conventional manipulation. This paper proposes to use GIS technology to set up an oil and gas prospecting information system. Data and graphical information from oil and gas exploration are stored in database and graphical library, respectively. Therefore, an information system that is in favor of decision making for oil and gas exploration has been established which uses different modules to accomplish information management, static inquiry, and dynamic analysis.
